Dearest Joan and family,
Words cannot describe how sorry we are for your loss. We pray The Lord will give you comfort and peace during this difficult time. As you ponder on the beautiful memories Jan has left behind, so shall we. My husband and I were so privileged and honored to know you and Jan. Words cannot describe what you have meant to us throughout the years. We will so miss Jan's beautiful loving Christian spirit and his dedication of faithful servant hood for his country and to others. We are so blessed to receive such beautiful words of wisdom from incredible heroic stories throughout his life during the war and how many lives he saved as a physician. We thank you for the wonderful times of fellowship and your generosity opening up your home to share priceless gems of hope to the younger generation. We always looked forward to being in the company of you and Jan especially enjoying Jan's sense of humor that brought so much joy to the stories he told. :)
Love, Tom and Sheila

I vividly remember a few years ago, at a Carmel Mission docent training event :
The attendees had eaten their meal, and were seated to listen to that night's speaker. To get trained on some sort of Art history, or whatever-the-topic of that night was, for the docent-tour leader's training. I was riveted to the speaker, sipping a bottled water . At a certain point, I must have taken the last sip off of my plastic water bottle, when a hand reached in, bringing another bottled water. It was Jan . He apparently saw that I had an empty water bottle, and had gotten up to go fetch another.
And as the night progressed, I noticed Jan doing the same for the other attendees : If someone finished their last sip off their wine glass or water bottle, there was Jan to add some more to their glass. He was litterally "waiting tables", as everyone else in the room was focussed on that night's speaker.
This caught me off-guard. Because, knowing a little about Jan , I thought to myself : "Why is this guy waiting on US, when, at his stage (over 90 at the time), and prestigious accomplishments, then HE should be the one getting waited on, hand and foot, by others of us younger people ?
It was quite humbling. And it brought to mind Jesus' quote in Matthew 20:26 : That "whomever among you wishes to become great , shall be your servant" . So instead of waiting around to be waited on (and well-deserved) Jan was there showing others the very force of this verse. I was quite amazed and humbled.
So too did Jan and Joan open their house to total strangers, at a time when they perhaps might have wished not-to-be-bothered. I am/was totally humbled to have even known and interacted with Jan. Thankyou Jan !

Jan Belza was the finest gentleman that I ever met. His heroic past during WWII, his many years as a world famous surgeon, and his beautiful and loving family were testimony to a great life. Personally, we lost our family in WWII and I had relatives in the camps. Knowing that Jan helped bring an end to WWII signifies the fact that he saved a great number of lives in that era. I will miss Jan very much as a friend, fellow parishioner at the Carmel Mission and above all I will miss the great conversations we had at the sumptuous dinner parties he and his wonderful family had at their beautiful home. Dr. Belza was a true hero. I didnt know it for several years while working in surgery with him. One day out of the blue he asked me (knowing I am Jewish} why I never asked him about the war. I didnt know I could was my lame answer. Well that was the beginning of a friendship. I am so grateful to have known him and only wish we had more time to talk. A great man, i will never forget him.
