Obituary of Charles Angelo Federico

Charles Angelo Federico

July 2, 1916 – February 12, 2021

Monterey

At 104 years old “Charlie” passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family and caregivers. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Lillian Rose Federico. He is survived by his son Henry Federico (Kathleen), daughter Kathy Renner (Ken), son David Federico (Debra), 7 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

With shoebox in hand, he started his working career shining shoes and selling newspapers on the sidewalks of San Jose, CA.

In 1940, he and his wife established Franklin Shoe Repair. He was awarded the National Silver Cup by the Shoe Service Institute of America and over the years won more awards than any other shoe repair in the U.S. In 1964 the business was renamed Federico’s Drive-in Shoe Service and relocated to Abrego St. where it still stands today.

He was very active in the community being a member of the Optimist, Exchange, Knights of Columbus, Elks, Paisano Club, and Monterey Chamber of Commerce.

After retiring he was known for his adventurous spirit and generous nature. He enjoyed traveling and living life to the fullest. At 100 years old one of the highlights of his life was serving as Grand Marshall in the 4th of July Parade. He exercised regularly at the YMCA up to age 103.

The family wishes to thank VNA Hospice, his caregivers “Charlie’s Angels” Donald, Michelle, Oliver, Tess, Myra, Chris, and Dale.

Due to COVID, the family is holding a private service. Donations may be sent in his name to the YMCA Monterey and/or VNA Hospice. Condolences may be written to the family at www.bermudezfamilyfunerals.com.
