Obituary of Eva DiMaggio

Eva DiMaggio completed 92 years when she joined the Lord on June 2, 2021. Surrounded by family and friends, Eva passed away at home following a short illness.

A native of Monterey, Eva was born on June 3, 1929 to Salvatore and Providenza DiMercurio. She attended the original Walter Colton School and graduated from Monterey High School. Eva’s parents were founding members of the historic Chiesa Evangelica, an Italian Protestant Church. The congregation that built its first sanctuary on Pacific Street was eventually forced by Monterey’s Urban Renewal Project to re-build in Carmel Valley and now exists as Sanctuary Bible Church. Eva was an enthusiastic pianist. She grew up playing the piano for Sunday School and church services. Playing the piano for friends and family would always be one of her greatest pleasures.

On April 24, 1949, Eva married Gaetano (Tom) DiMaggio, a native of San Vito lo Capo, Sicily. They recently celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. They raised three children while Tom was successful as a local fisherman and Eva owned several popular Carmel retail shops. Her favorite was the Wicks and Wax Candle shop in Doud Arcade.

Eva is survived by her husband Tom; daughter Marilyn Jeanette and granddaughter Meredith Smith; son Sal David and Cynthia; brother Sal (Morwen) DiMercurio as well as many nieces and nephews in the United States and Sicily. She was preceded in death by son Thomas Sebastion and sister Ursula (George) Souza.

Funeral services are scheduled at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 9, 2021, at Sanctuary Bible Church, 8340 Carmel Valley Rd., Carmel.  A private interment will be at San Carlos Cemetery in Monterey.
