Edward Adams

Obituary of Edward Budd Adams

Edward Budd Adams “Budd”, beloved brother, died suddenly and unexpectedly in his Monterey home March 20th, he was 68. Born in Bethesda, MD on September 28, 1948, his parents were Ramona Budd Davis of Carmel and Joseph Elrie Adams of Coupeville, WA. His maternal grandparents were Ramona and Edward Budd of Oakland, CA, and his paternal grandparents were Julia and Joseph Adams of Dawson, Georgia. Budd grew up on the family farm in Empire, CA east of Modesto where he worked in the orchards and supervised the annual harvests. He attended Downey High School in Modesto where he was active in extracurricular pursuits and excelled at varsity level athletics, particularly baseball, and at academics. On the basis of his excellent academic performance at Downey and motivated by his strong Catholic faith Budd entered University of San Francisco where he studied literature and writing. Budd was handsome, personable, thoughtful, and academically gifted, a golden boy. All this promise was cut short, tragically and without warning at the end of his junior year at USF: Budd was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and bi-polar disorders. His world descended into a nightmare of terrifying voices, the harsh drugs and electro shock therapies, which were the psychiatric treatments of the time, and mental hospitals. Budd was eventually able to move in to a group home in Waterford, CA, “The Buddy Farm” set up by his mother Ramona Budd Davis and his sister Julia Foster-Bates. When his mother moved to Carmel Budd was able to come with her and to live independently in Pacific Grove where he worked for many years at St. Angela’s Catholic Church. Budd’s last years were happier and filled with life. His family was always there for dinner, a movie, a cup of coffee or a trip to the store. Budd’s devoted caretaker, Theresa Ferreira, took him into her life, introducing him to her friends and family and taking him on road trips around California. He was a sweet, lovely man, thoughtful and kind to the very limits of his abilities. He is sorely missed. Budd is survived by his devoted sister Julia Foster-Bates of Carmel, his brother William Adams of Monterey, his brother Joseph Adams of New York City, his sister Theresa Occhino of Fountain Valley, CA and his brother Timothy Adams of Carmel. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at 12 Noon at St. Angela Merici Catholic Church in Pacific Grove. Committal service will follow in the San Carlos Cemetery, Monterey.
