Ms Hardy was an exceptional teacher and person. I admired her greatly. How lucky we were to have her as a teacher at Carmel High.

Words fail me, I am crushed. I KNOW we will see her again! She gave such light, joy and hope to a lonely boy who loved to perform. Carmel was a magical place in the 1960's. Because of her enthusiasm and encouragement I KNEW I could do anything. All those who were so integral to my young life have left us now, Rosamond Goodrich and Nick Zanides who ran the wonderful Golden Bough Circle Players theatre, a truly professional theatre, where I acted as a child. I will always remember Miss Hardy attending my childhood productions, and it made me proud to know that she cared and loved me as her student to even come to these productions. I am shedding a few now as I remember. So long ago but only a breath away...

Tim, I also remember Ros and Nick fondly, much less the wonderful Diana, although my era was a bit later than yours (the late 70's). I share your sorrow at such great mentors who have passed...it's hard.

How quickly times passes. Sometimes it seems like yesterday that I was in Miss Hardy's class. It was American Literature. "Birth of a Nation", "Streetcar named Desire". Always interesting, and something I have carried with me ever since. So thank you, Miss Hardy for your love of literature, theatre and teaching. Thank you for passing it on .

When I think of writing about Diana, I feel it could become a book, so I will try to edit my thoughts. Diana Hardy was one of the first people to befriend me when I came to Carmel. That will always endear her to me. Our theatre interests were warmly shared and I started choreographing musicals for her. I’m not sure musicals were ever her favorite form of theatre, but she knew the students loved them and she certainly loved her students. Dance was a different story. Her dear friend, and the only “boyfriend” I was ever aware of, was a most handsome dancer. Every person’s life is such a tapestry and Diana was no exception. In addition to being a good friend and a talented teacher, she was also an accomplished artist. I will always remember the huge Arch de Triomphe she made for me to use in a fundraiser. She was sharp-witted, stubborn at times, never mean spirited, occasionally "feisty" and always generous of spirit. It had been a couple years since we would meet for lunch, chat on the phone, and of course send the usual Birthday and Christmas greetings. It seemed as if she was reluctant to be as sociable as she usually was. I could appreciate and accept her position. Before I knew of her passing, she came to my mind often. Perhaps it was her way of saying goodbye. When you merge talents to create art, there is a lasting bond. I was greatly relieved to know that Diana had such excellent care toward the end of her days because she was truly a devoted daughter and caregiver to her parents. She will be missed, but she and the memories we shared will remain in my heart always. God Bless you, Diana, for all that you meant to me and to those who loved you so much. It was clever of you (smile) to leave this plane on the same day as Chris' birthday. You will never be forgotten. Cretia

A very special woman and teacher. She was VERY tough on me and I appreciate that even now. Even though she was tough, she was very loving and supportive. I loved her intellect, her humanity and her humor. She valued me very much, even when I didn't see value in myself. I will cherish her influence in my life. Again, a very special woman and teacher, one of the really important people in my life.

Travel on and travel well Diana, I sincerely hope we meet again.

This is news I’ve long been dreading. How do you put into words on a page a description of such a great friend and such a wonderful friendship? I guess I’d have to begin by saying that my heart is broken. When you had Diana Hardy as a friend, she was also your champion. She listened, gave advice, cried with you, laughed (a lot) with you, supported, encouraged, cared and loved. How I will miss the hundreds of hours we spent talking about theatre, actors, television, movies, what was happening on the Peninsula and people we knew in common. Long, gossipy, exciting conversations. I was blessed, truly blessed, to have had Diana as a friend for more than 40 years. It’s too bad that the picture of her on this page is in black and white. It misses the warmth and sparkle of her beautiful blue eyes. There was nothing better than sharing a good laugh with her and watching those eyes light up. There is so much I will miss about Diana it’s impossible to list everything. I will tell her myself, in private moments, no doubt with tears streaming down my face, how much she is missed and how much she was loved.

I was a shy 12 year old boy, who was blessed to have Diana Hardy come into my life as a teacher, friend and mentor at Carmel Junior High (now Middle School) in 1964. She inspired me and gave me wind beneath my sails to pursue what I loved, acting, performing. She never accepted less then perfection and only asked that you never give up. She was a loving taskmaster...and I wonder if anyone else remembers her cracking her father's bullwhip across the front of the classroom to keep order and show she was boss of her domain? Could not do that in these days, sad. She made acting in junior and high school plays, seem as if they were as important and exciting as major Broadway productions! I am overwhelmed by this news of her passing and in the past few years I attempted to keep in touch with her, sadly knowing this day would come... even though she seldom answered. I will never forget her, she gave love and encouragement to a lonely young boy and made me feel I could do anything! Another stellar human has left this world and left it a bit darker.
Ring down the curtain, dim the lights, A GREAT LADY IS PASSING...

Diana was a kind, smart wonderful woman that helped shape me when I moved to Carmel Valley and became of the her CHS theater troop. She made my transition to a new school easier, provided guidance when I got into UCLA's theater arts department and always remained a friend.
She acted as a much loved aunt to my son and daughter, even getting my daughter into Ryman Arts. She encouraged both of them to use their creative abilities.
Her sense of humor, love of people and artistic sensibilities are what I will always remember. I feel so lucky to have had her as part of my life and I will miss her.

What a lovely woman. I was fortunate to be at Carmel Middle & High Schools from 1963-1969, and had the privilege and pleasure of taking classes with Miss Hardy. We all had fun. I loved her laugh, which she so sweetly shared with all of us. Rest in peace.

Miss Hardy was the reason I studied acting in London and pursued performing arts throughout my life. She gave me confidence, support and an excellent education in theater. I am grateful beyond words that I was one of her students. God bless all who loved her.

Please accept my condolences on the passing of Diana Hardy. I am a 1966 graduate of Carmel High School and was fortunate to study dramatic arts with her at CHS and at Carmel Middle School. I have particularly fond memories of the very successful Middle School staging of "Finian's Rainbow" at Sunset Auditorium and of the High School's excellent production of "Harvey." She even arranged an audition for me for a part in the film "The Sandpiper," starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. Although I went on to a career in college teaching, my education in drama in Carmel has always been for me a source of great value and pleasure.

She was a ball of fire and my much loved drama teacher at Carmel High School in the late 70's. My husband and I ran into her at an art gallery in Carmel many years after that and she was just as wonderful as i remembered. She always scared me just a little but that was good. I am sorry for your loss and grateful to have known her.

It is a very sad occasion for me to say good bye to my beloved friend and mentor, Diana. As many will know, Diana was like a 2nd mother to me and was unfailing in her support over 42 years. It is hard to imagine life without her - I will miss the cards at each and every holiday on the calendar and the keen interest she took in my life. I will also miss her wonderful stories of various events in her own life - she widened my horizons when I had never travelled outside of California, and was no doubt was an important influence that contributed to my decision to go back East to university and then ultimately to move to England. She was equally as generous with her support of my daughter, Pamela, and amongst her last words was an expression for Pamela's well being which is very touching. Of course, as the CHS drama teacher she was an inspiration to me and so many others, and those who participated in the drama productions will never forget it. I know I don't/won't. Her generosity in terms of the time she spent with us 'drama geeks' was unparalleled. In her last few years, Diana was tenderly cared for by her neighbour, Diane McKenzie, together with a number of carers, who all did an amazing job and ensured Diana was well taken care of and that her wishes were abided by. It has been such a comfort to know that she was at peace when she died, in her home surrounded by love. I will miss you so much Diana. Thank you for everything you did for me and God bless you. Until we meet again..... xxxx

So sorry to learn of the passing of Diana Hardy. She was one of the greatest Carmel High School teachers of them all, in my opinion, shepherding through amazing drama productions within the then-limited stage confines on campus, and even at Sunset Theater.
