Obituary of Medric Wade

Medric Garwood Wade was born in Woodson, Arkansas, the youngest of six children of Jesse and Tennessee Garwood. She graduated as valedictorian of her class from Dunbar High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. In 1944 she married her husband, Famous Wade, became a military wife, had three daughters, and traveled throughout the US and Europe. Following her husband’s retirement from the military in 1962, she and her family made their home in Seaside. Here, Medric became the first African-American on the Monterey Peninsula to be hired by the Bank of America, where she worked until she was hired at Monterey Peninsula College, eventually taking the responsibility as of Director of Financial Aid at Monterey Peninsula College (MPC). While working in this capacity, she also traveled throughout the state, worked with College Scholarship Commission, the College Board and the ETS in Princeton, New Jersey, and found time to earn a BA in Psychology. Following her retirement from MPC, Medric provided consultation and workshops for Santa Catalina and York school parents on financing Higher Education. Medric was a founding member of The Group, an active member of the Soroptomists. She had a life-long love of flowers and raised roses and orchids. She was a follower of the O’Hara School of Ikebana, serving as the Monterey Peninsula chapter’s Secretary and attaining advanced instructor qualification. She was the adored Matriarch of a family dispersed around the world: Vancouver, Montreal, Brussels, Sonoma, San Francisco, Boston, New York and Washington, D.C. Summers and Christmases have brought this family together to enjoy her love and wisdom. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Famous Wade, her daughters Dr. Cheryl Wade (Sonoma, California), and Sandra Wade Pauly (Vancouver, BC); her sons-in-law Dr. Daniel Pauly (Vancouver, BC) and Dr. Greg Eyring (Silver Spring, MD); and five grandchildren: Ilya Pauly, Angela Pauly, Annijke Wade, Katherine Eyring, and Benjamin Eyring.
