James Morrell

Obituary of James Morrell

James Francis Morrell, 74, residing in Carmel CA, passed away peacefully in his home on January 1, 2017, having beat the odds and surviving 2.5 years with Pancreatic Cancer. Jim was born on May 1, 1942 in Park Ridge Illinois to Louis C. and Marian L. Morrell. He was the youngest of 3 siblings, David Morrell and Marilou Kelly, both who preceded Jim in passing. Jim attended Maine Township High School in Park Ridge Illinois, Cornell University and DePauw University for undergraduate studies, and Northwestern University for medical school. He married Jean Waddell, also from Park Ridge, on August 15th 1964. Jim served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps at Fort Knox Kentucky. He completed his Urology residency at the University of Utah and subsequently established a 30-year solo practice in Salt Lake City at St. Mark's Hospital. His office staff, a mother and daughter team, remained in his employ for the entire duration of his practice. For Jim, establishing an empathetic relationship with his patients was critical to the success he felt as a physician. He and Jean fell in love with the Santa Lucia Preserve in Carmel California, and moved there in 2003 after his retirement. The ability to ride horses, hike quiet redwood lined trails and play golf in your own "back yard" was an exciting opportunity. Jim loved Porsches, wine, food, golf, running marathons, the Chicago Bears, and caring for their horses. He was happiest when in the backcountry of the West, in the Tetons, Wind Rivers, Uintas, and Bitteroots, hiking, backpacking and cross- country skiing. He held a special interest in the landscapes and archeology of Southern Utah and the Four Corners region. Golf had always been a passion of his. He was a member of the Salt Lake Country Club and upon moving to the Preserve played golf there, where he was known for his "perfect swing." Jim is survived by his wife Jean and his two sons, Gregory David Morrell and Jeffrey James Morrell, daughter in-law Kathleen, grandson Anthony, and granddaughters Jessica and Avery. It is Jim's wish as a memorial to him, that a fund be created for the benefit of his granddaughter, Avery Morrell, who has Cerebral Palsy and Seizure Disorder. This fund will be used specifically for special education, therapies and extraordinary medical expenses.
