Obituary of Eric L. Shue

Eric passed away early in the morning on Saturday, September 24th in the loving arms of his wife and son at home. Eric's time with us was cut short after an 11-month battle with colon cancer, which he battled courageously, never giving up the fight. Born in Indiana to Floyd and Jane Shue, Eric was a loving husband, father, brother, son, uncle, and friend. His witty personality and loving disposition is a tremendous loss to us all. Eric traveled to California in the early seventies hoping to live in Big Sur. His first stop was in Southern California, where he started his career in construction. He eventually moved to Victorville where he met the love of his life, Cathy, and welcomed the birth of their son, Derek. In 1984, Eric and Cathy moved to the Monterey Peninsula to raise their son and live near the fabled Big Sur. Next to family, Eric's passions included music, hiking, and backpacking in the Sierra Mountains and Ventana Wilderness. One summer, Eric and Cathy hiked over 200 miles throughout California. He spent countless weekends hiking with his friend, Craig; explorations he fondly talked about with such a love of life and the outdoors. Many nights and weekends were also spent traveling to music festivals and concerts both across the state and close to home. Eric operated a custom cabinet shop that started in Pacific Grove, eventually moving to Elkhorn. He was a master craftsman, building furniture, cabinetry, and custom design projects, often landing his work on the pages of several architectural and interior design magazines. Eric continued to work in his cabinet shop for over 25 years, retiring in 2015. In 2005, Eric and Cathy opened up InSight Eyewear in Monterey. Eric was a familiar face in the store for many years manufacturing lenses, performing repairs, helping the sales team, and always giving the utmost in customer service. Eric built most of the displays throughout the store in his "spare time." Eric is survived by his wife and companion of 38 years, Cathy; his son Derek and wife Ashleigh of Santa Barbara, California; his brother Robert "Craig" Shue and wife Jan of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Floyd Shue, in 1989 and his mother, Jane Shue, in January 2016.
