Obituary of Bettie Delight Fisk

Bettie Delight Fisk, A Short Biography Born to Jimmy Lynd, one quarter Sioux, itinerant evangelist in the Foursquare Church; and to Fern Viola Pedersen, both assistant pastors to Rev. Aimee Semple McPherson (Angelus Temple). They both graduated from Bible College and were married by Aimee before her mysterious disappearance. Bettie traveled with her parents and a nursemaid across the country where her parents conducted tent revivals. As a toddler she began singing on stage with her parents, sometimes on the radio. She was their only child for 9 years until her baby sister, Connie was born. She attended 18 schools in 18 years. She told us that she made many friends this way but that it was difficult to keep up with her studies. Her first boyfriend was Rader, a 19-year-old when she was 13. He joined the military. She later sang at the Christian Servicemen's Center where she met her future husband, Glen Fisk, came to the Church of the Open Door in Los Angeles. He was active in The Navigators' Bible Study program and so before they married, they lived in the Navigator Community where Bettie cooked for the rest of the family. While Glen was aboard his naval ship over the next year, They wrote to each other every day. Glen entered SF State University on the GI Bill upon his return and Bettie worked at Blum's Candy until the birth of their first child, Judy. They lived in the first student housing at SF State, military Quonset huts. Glen worked at Alpha Beta to support themselves. When Glen entered Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, Bettie sang every Sunday with the Old Fashioned Revival Hour. He was in their first graduating class and Bettie was an active member of the wives' club, called "Koinonia", which was sponsored by Mrs. Charles Fuller. Their second child, Debbie, was born. Soon after Glen's graduation, he and Bettie moved to Waimea, Kauai, in the Territory of Hawaii, to pastor two Congregational churches, the Hawaiian Church (primarily for Hawaiians and residents of Niihau-- indigenous people) and the Foreign Church (mostly the Robinson Family, owners of Niihau and much of Kauai. Bettie developed a Sunday School program for the children of both churches, as well as Vacation Bible School classes, and Child Evangelism Fellowship after school programs. The Robinsons hired her to teach their two sons at home so she did that during the week. On the weekends she led the choirs and started women's groups. During this time, Wendie, their third child was born. After 3 1/2 years, the Fisks moved to the Kona Coast to pastor 7 churches. A Christian Education Director was hired to handle Sunday School, choirs, and Bible study groups, etc. while Glen did preaching in the 7 churches, weddings, funerals, pastoral visitation, church business, and other administrative responsibilities. He initiated building projects on both islands, including 2 Sunday School wings and fellowship hall. Bettie also had guests to Sunday lunch several Sundays every month, often tourists from all over the world. In the morning before church she often put a pot roast and vegetables in the oven, expecting that they might need it for yet “unknown” new friends. She sang solos, duets and trios for church and hotel programs of the church. She also helped to run summer camps every summer--including the food, housing and activities (one of which was taking a truck of campers to witness Kilauea Iki, a live volcanic eruption.) Meanwhile she and her husband were raising three daughters, concerned about their education and language development. She did not allow "pidgin English" to be spoken at home and was ever careful to keep them in church activities as much as possible, and away from other influences such as native beliefs, and worldly music on the radio. No dancing, drinking, smoking, playing cards, movies, etc. The local high school principal asked Bettie to substitute teach. He assured her that she could do it since she'd taught Sunday school. She had some interesting assignments, including Band and Boys' PE. She once chased a high school student down the hall to convince him to come back to class. She then tutored him between classes because he had learning differences. After 7 1/2 years and when Judy had completed 11th grade, the family moved to Santa Rosa California in order for the children to attend mainland schools. Bettie supported Glen in his position of Christian Education Minister. They moved to Mayflower Church for 8 1/2 years. Bettie was active in the Women’s' Ministries and choir and other entertaining. A few years later they moved to Oregon for him to pastor in a Baptist Church with Rev. David Croy. Glen was sponsored to start the Fisk Family Counseling Center. Bettie was his secretary. After a few years Rev. Wayne Adams contacted him to return to the Peninsula to Cypress Community Church where Bettie and he were very active with supporting community life, and programs for singles and seniors. They did traveling to Japan, Africa, Hawaii, Israel and European countries, sometimes taking groups of travelers with them. Bettie most often planned these travel trips. In their final years of ministry, Glen was Carmel Presbyterian's Pastor of Visitation, Weddings and Funerals, which he loved. Bettie attended them with him and frequently sang solos. Bettie was a leader and participant for many years in the Women in The Word Bible study program. Bettie was Glen's primary caregiver while he was dying of cancer for a year and a half. Two years after he died, she moved into Canterbury Woods, made possible by the "Agape Fund" of the Carmel Presbyterian Church. She considered that her final "mission field", loving and ministering to her fellow residents, who in turn ministered to her.
