Obituary of Barbara Burdick

BARBARA BURDICK, known to everyone as “Barbie”, died at her home in Carmel on April 25, 2016. She was the daughter of Bernard Wood Burdick and Theresa Burdick (nee Mahoney) of Springfield, Massachusetts. After attending Vassar College she and her mother moved to the Monterey Peninsula, where she led a long and active life in volunteer activities, including the Monterey Museum of Art and La Mirada. She enjoyed bridge, gardening and sports, especially tennis and golf, at which she excelled even late in life. A former curator of the Stevenson House Museum, Barbie wrote and charmingly illustrated a little book on Robert Louis Stevenson’s time in Monterey. She also worked at the Monterey adobes where she became quite prolific in the history of Monterey. She was a member of the Beach and Tennis Club and Carmel Valley Ranch Golf Club. Barbie had an unbelievable way with animals and was affectionately known as the “dog whisperer”. She was an active supporter of the SPCA. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, leaving behind a niece in Minnesota. Barbie also leaves behind a family of friends on the Monterey Peninsula and across the country, who will miss her greatly. She lived a full and active life up until her death. A funeral mass will be celebrated on May 11, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Carmel Valley.
