Obituary of Callie Chastain

Obituary Callie Marie Chastain, age 38, of Monterey, California passed away peacefully on June 17, 2019 with her mother by her side. She was beloved by her parents, brothers and sisters, partner and young son. Callie was born on January 7, 1981 in Leon, Iowa to Robert and Kathleen Chastain. She graduated from Central Decatur school in 1999 and was active in sports, clubs and organizations. She attended the University of Iowa and graduated in 2004. She was active in all usual college activities, drove a campus bus and worked as the lead dispatcher for the local school bus, where she was a master at her “professional voice“. She studied abroad in Spain and love traveling. She traveled to England, China, Germany, France and Belgium. Her travels eventually took her to Palm Springs California for a new adventure close to her mom. There she was the Administrative Assistant for Desert Town Hall. She also worked as a barista to support her love of travel. While in Palm Springs, she met David Heffington. Callie was always up for new adventures from scuba diving trips with her brother Luke, to picking up and moving to Monterey with Dave. There they enjoyed camping trips, hiking, snowboarding and softball. Callie received her Masters Degree at the California State University, Monterey Bay, where she also worked her way up to the position of senior analyst for the College of Business. In 2016 she was blessed with the birth of her son, Jackson. Her sister Cayle came from Iowa to help and was a blessing to her and Dave as they began this new adventure. Jackson was the light of her life. Callie wasn’t afraid of adventure and easily made friends everywhere she went. She was always active. She enjoyed softball league, hiking, golfing and scuba diving. Callie was always straight shooter who wasn’t afraid to say what was on her mind. She had the ability to get to the heart of the matter. She adored her family and made sure to spend time in Iowa and Palm Springs. She loved watching her son learn to swim in Meemaw’s pool with the “bratties”. Dean Shyam Kamath, Callie’s Supervisor at the College of Business at CSUMB, wrote “It was Socrates who said that the unexamined life is not worth living. Callie lived an examined and giving life that extolled and improved the worth of all the lives she came in contact with. She made our lives worth living and now we will have to make our lives worth even more in her memory”. She is survived by her son Jackson and partner David Heffington, her parents Bob and Kathy Chastain, brothers, Luke (Michelle) Chastain, Danny Chastain, sisters, Cayle (Jason) Buckingham and Vallie (Larry) Kuster, many aunts, uncles and cousins and many many friends far and wide. She was beloved by many and her presence will be sadly missed. The family will hold a memorial service on Friday July 5, 2019 at the Leon Country Club from 1 to 3pm. In lieu of flowers, the University established the Callie Chastain Memorial Fund to benefit her son, Jackson or donations may be made to the Colon Cancer Association in her honor.
