I was a classmate of Joe’s at Cal Poly. Since he was a rock climber, and money was tight, he decided to sew his on nylon slings, but before using them he wanted to test their strength. So we went down to the stress laboratory and put the slings into the massive stress machine. Fortunately his sewing was good and the slings didn’t fail at high loads. He will be missed.
